Message I've just discovered tsWebEditor and there is a chance I
just haven't found it yet ...

On what html-standard is it based? Is it possible to make it
compliant with xhtml? For example, if you press shift+enter
at the end of a line tsWebEditor inserts a <br> tag. Is
there a way to make it insert it like <br /> instead? Is
there a file you can edit or something somewhere?

I guess you can fix it with tidy, but it'd be nicer if it
was done right from the start.
